RE: Brood in super

Here's how I handle brood in honey supers: it happens to me often because I dislike queen excluders for more than one reason, therefore I always find brood in the honeysupers. I let the brood hatch, there comes a time when they queen will not lay eggs up there any more. If and when I need to extract, I remove only full honey frames - not the entire box (as a hobby beekeeper I have the luxury of time to do this). I do this because I think in late summer and fall every egg is precious. It takes a little manipulation, my motto is alway if it's good for the bees, it's good for me. P.S. I don't understand why this in anonymous. This is Heidi commenting on your question.

Wondering other people's thoughts on bee behavior. We have three hives and today all three were flying frantically around the entrance. I thought perhaps all three hives had bees who were learning to fly and were just flying about the entrance. I also wondered if maybe robbing was going on. I looked at hive entrances for signs of fighting but saw none. I did see a few bees on the entryway with their butts in the air and wings moving-is this an aggressive act or was it an attempt to cool the hive on the first warm day of summer? Some bees were flying normally in and out bringing in nectar and large dollops of pollen. Any thoughts?

Bear warning- My empty boxes were broken up and frames scattered all over the yard last week in Windham! Glad I had the electric fence turned on to save my colonies. Severe shortage of queens and pkgs! Only source "Simpsons bees "- can ship from Ohio. Call 740-599-7914. Watch out for SWARMS on Saturday- the first sunny warm day since several cold, wet days! Get ready to catch your own. Set up "catcher hives to attract them back home! Dick Johnson

We had two hive bodies and several supers set up through the winter. Today we reversed the hive bodies and both were rather light. One was vacant (the one that was on the bottom) and the other had a few frames partially filled with brood and honey. The supers were heavy with honey, brood, and pollen. Since most of the bees are concentrated in the top supers, I suspect that reversing the hive bodies will do little to deter swarming. When the supers are full will they move down to the empty hive box? I am going to wait a couple weeks and check it again. I was thinking perhaps we should find the queen, put her in the bottom hive box and put a queen excluder between the hive boxes and supers. Any thoughts?

I have had the same trouble when I left honey supers on during the winter. I think the best thing to do is to force the queen down to the brood chambers gradually using a queen excluder. You don't want to separate her too far from the brood and the nurse bees that tend it. It can still get pretty cold this time of year.

Hello Group! First, as a new member of the Catskill Mountain Beekeepers Club and a virgin beekeeper, let me tell you how thrilled i am to see this new discussion board!
Ok, now for the first of many, many questions: Recently I took out the honey supers that I purchased (used) and set them out in the sun to air out. Immediately I had 6 honeybees investigating and since then have noticed upwards of 20 bees around them the surrounding area. My questions: 1. Is it bad to have these bees in the honey supers? 2. It seems that there must be a hive nearby. Since we live in the woods I'm suspecting it might be a wild hive. Is there any way (besides chasing bees) to locate it?
Thanks for all of your insight. Mikko Cook

Thanks! I actually did some research after posting (should have done that first) and found out all about beelining. Very interesting, although I stink at math so triangulating the bees hive might be a bit grueling. :)
Thanks for your response. I welcome any and all advice.
